On March 6, 2023, the BJMP Digos City District Jail, Female Dormitory, held a capacity-building program on oyster mushroom production as part of their LIFE Behind Walls Program under the Extension and Community Relations Office and in line with the Institute of Agriculture and Related Sciences (IARs) project on oyster mushroom production and marketing. This program aims to provide women PDL with practical skills and knowledge that can help them build sustainable livelihoods and prepare for reintegration into society. Thirty-three (33) women PDLs participated in the activity, along with four women and four men jail officers who volunteered to support the training. Additionally, six training facilitators headed provided hands-on guidance and instruction to the participants throughout the day-long program. This first training covered substrate preparation of oyster mushroom production. There will be another series of training for cultivation, and harvesting. The program also emphasized the importance of hygiene, safety, and entrepreneurship, providing the participants with a well-rounded understanding of the industry and the skills necessary to succeed. As we celebrate Women's Month, it is important to recognize the challenges that women PDL face and the resilience and determination that they demonstrate every day. Through programs like the LIFE Behind Walls Program, we can help create a more equitable and just society for all, one where women have the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
